Why the BRABAR Movement Was Necessary

For decades, the bra industry has had a persistent problem: improper fit. Roughly 8 out of 10 women wear the wrong bra size, often resulting in discomfort, inadequate support, and a real impact on how they feel day to day. That widespread issue traces back to outdated fitting methods, like the "plus-four" and armpit techniques, which produce a band that's larger than what actually sits under the bust and fails to provide real support.

The "Shop by Band" Initiative

In 2019, BRABAR introduced the "Shop by Band" initiative to address this directly. The core idea was simple but overlooked: the band, not the cup, is responsible for roughly 80% of a bra's support. Traditional fitting methods focused heavily on cup size while treating the band as an afterthought, which contributed to a common misconception — that a bra is simply a place to hang the bust, supported mainly by the shoulder straps rather than the band itself.

The initiative shifted that focus. Measuring directly under the bust, around the rib cage, and rounding to the nearest even number produces a more accurate band size than adding extra inches or measuring higher on the torso. A properly fitting band should feel snug, like a hug, around the ribcage — not tight, and not held up by the straps.

Why This Mattered Especially for Teens

For teenage girls in particular, buying a first bra is rarely just about finding the right fit — it's often tied up with body image and self-consciousness at an already vulnerable age. BRABAR's approach aimed to change that conversation, shifting the focus from body image toward self-love and genuine comfort, so bra shopping could be a positive experience rather than a confusing or stressful one.

Industry Impact

Since the initiative launched, more brands and retailers have begun referencing the rib cage method and prioritizing band size in their fitting guidance — real, if gradual, progress. Some still add extra inches rather than rounding to the nearest even number, so the shift isn't complete, but the conversation around bra fit has genuinely moved in this direction industry-wide.

#NotJustABra

The hashtag #NotJustABra captures the core of this philosophy: for many women, and especially teens, buying a bra isn't just a transaction — it's a moment tied to how they feel about their bodies. Creating a fitting process that's genuinely informative and supportive, rather than confusing, is part of making that moment a positive one instead of a source of self-doubt.
