It can feel like the biggest win when you finally find a bra that fits you and makes you feel comfortable in your body. However, it can also feel like one of the biggest losses when all of a sudden that bra no longer fits you a month or two later. Maybe the cups are feeling tight, maybe the band feels loose, maybe the under wire is poking you or maybe you just feel uncomfortable overall in a bra that used to be your safe space. Don’t worry your bra size fluctuating is completely normal and you're not meant to stay the same forever. However, the normalcy of this does not always make it any easier to deal with mentally. Your body is naturally changing throughout your years of growing up and different growth spurts, hormones, athletics, weight fluctuations, and even medication can completely affect your bust size and shape and therefore lead you to needing a new bra. Changing your bra size absolutely does not mean that anything is wrong with your body. It just means that your body is developing and becoming something new and that’s not a negative thing.

Is It Normal for Your Bra Size to Change?

So short answer, yes. It is completely normal for your bra size to change as you get older and grow. Many people assume that once they have finally figured out their bra size, they are then set for life and can be guaranteed a comfortable bra. In reality, unfortunately this is not the case. Luckily we grow and change every single year and therefore might need a new bra size. Your body can constantly be changing because of so many different reasons that are completely normal. No matter why your body is changing it is nothing to freak out about, it is completely normal and healthy. Even the smallest changes in your body can completely affect how your bras fit. Remember that bra sizes are just a reflection of measurements and not a permanent label that rates your bodies worth.

How Can Growth Spurts Change My Bra Size

Okay, so I know that when everyone thinks of growth spurt, they mainly think of how your height is changing but growth spurts actually affect your entire body. Growth spurts are pretty much rapid hormone surges that can affect your entire body. For women, primarily estrogen levels surge which is what drives what feels like rapid development of your body. So when your body is developing so quickly, it can change in so many ways and feel like your body is developing at a pace which you can't keep up with. At first, you may not even notice that your bra and breast are a huge player in this development. Breast development usually happens unevenly, which means that one breast will probably grow bigger than your other, which is completely normal. These rapid periods of change are usually followed by a plateau of development however, whatever change speed you are growing at it is all completely normal and probably different than the people around you. Your growth isn’t always predictable and you may feel like your development is over and then all of a sudden have another spurt of change. It’s all completely normal and a part of the process of growing up.

How Can Hormones Affect How My Bra Fits?

So your hormones are a constant in influencing your breast tissue throughout your entire life. As many of us know, we have monthly hormonal changes which happen during our menstruation cycle, and your breasts can change along with that. Your period directly affects your bra size. In the days leading up to menstruation hormonal surges increase fluid retention, and may cause your breast to temporarily feel bigger. This change can have a wide effect on bra size, and sometimes can even boost women up a full cup size. This means that on a monthly basis, you may be consistently wearing different bra sizes. This isn’t saying that your body is doing something wrong, it is just another part of your cycle and affects every girl differently. Temporary changes based on your cycle do not necessarily mean that you need a new bra immediately. It truly all depends on how you feel the most comfortable and what bras support that comfort. Chances are that your bra size will return to normal after your cycle, but it could be a smart idea to buy a new bra for the more fuller parts of your cycle so you can maximize comfort and avoid the possibility of feeling like something is wrong with your body.

How Can Medications Affect My Bra Size?

So the main medication that people report as affecting their bra sizes is birth control. Because of the fact that birth control is controlling your menstruation cycle, it affects the way your breasts change when you are menstruating. Hormonal birth control can affect breast tissue for some people and for others you can be left completely unaffected. You may notice temporary fullness, increased tenderness, or slight changes to the way your profits and for other people there might be little to no noticeable change. Birth control is a very personal medication. When beginning or ending your use of birth control your body may take a good amount of time to adjust. During that time, your body and your bra probably will develop and change, that is completely normal. This new normal is completely up to you. Other medications can also influence your bra size and your weight. If you notice significant changes and you’ve recently started a medication and there was never a problem with asking your healthcare provider or doctor about the ways that the medication you are taking may affect your body. Your responsibility to yourself is to know yourself and to know the way medication is affecting you, remember in order to look your best. You must feel your best.

How Can Weight Change Affect My Bra Size?

Everyone gains weight differently, and when you gain weight, it goes to different parts of your body, this is the same for when people lose weight. It is natural that you’re going to have weight fluctuations as you age whether they be up or down, and they can affect your body and specifically your bust size in ways you may not originally expect. Gaining and losing weight may affect your cups or affect your band, or they might affect your boss shape. There’s no guarantee that weight gain or weight loss will affect one thing specifically; it is all very subjective to your body's individuality. Remember you’re worth isn’t measured by your bra size or the number on a scale. It is measured by your own sense of self. Try to find bras that are as comfortable as possible for what your current body needs.

Wait, So How Can Sports And Exercise Change The Way My Bra Fits?

Just like any kind of physical activity, being active can definitely change your body, and included in your body is your breasts. Strength training and building upper body muscle can have extreme effects on your chest. Your bra may lie completely differently over a different body that may result from regular exercise. Even if your weight is saying the same, your body may be changing and that’s completely normal. And can result in you needing a new bra. Also, don’t forget about sports bras. Just because you can wear an everyday bra to work out sometimes does not mean that you should. Sports bras are designed with the specific intention to protect you and provide support to you without feeling overly tight or restricting to yourself as you are working out. Allow yourself the freedom to give your body exercise and also give your body what it needs in the form of support, including for your breasts.

What Do You Mean My Bust Shape Can Change Even If My Size Doesn’t?

There are so many aspects about wearing a bra that can be confusing, especially when the bra industry is historically under educating its consumers. Because bra size is a reflection of your measurements most bras don’t necessarily accommodate the actual shape change that can happen to your boss. But shape can change for many different reasons, including growth, hormones, muscle development, or just natural maturation that happens as you go through puberty and get older. Even if your size stays the same your bra can still fit completely differently, if the shape of your breasts has changed, you may still wear the same size, but discovering the different style brought makes you feel a lot more secure than maybe it did in the past. Sometimes your bra issue isn’t your size it’s actually your style, although this seems to be an under-discovered issue. It is very important to think about it, if all of a sudden you are hit with bra failure.

What Should I Do If My Bra Size Changes?

Your process of developing and bra size changing is completely normal. Absolutely do not panic. If you feel like you no longer feel comfortable in your bra. One Last Thing Before You Go

If you feel like your bra size is constantly changing, I promise you, you are not alone. Personally, it took me years to finally find a bra that fit and understand what everyone was talking about when they said bras could be comfortable. Your body is constantly adapting as you grow and changes in hormones, activity level, weight, medications and natural development can completely affect how your breasts fit and the success you have in different models. Instead of getting attached to one size, think of your bra as something that is meant to change with you and support all of the changes emotionally and physically that you were going through. The number and letter on your or simply tools that are used to help you find comfort and support. They do not actually mean anything when it comes to defining your body and what it is capable of. Pay attention to how your bra is feeling, and if it is no longer comfortable, supportive and fits well it is time to change things up. Remember change can be fun and sometimes freeing, and it is definitely something to look forward to.
