Not sure what to ask when buying a bra? These are the questions that can save you from an uncomfortable fit.
By: Lucy DiChristina
Sometimes when you walk into a bra store it can feel like everyone knows something that you don't. Buying a bra for the first time sometimes can feel like entering a whole new world. It comes with a whole new set of questions. But that also means it comes with a whole new set of discoveries about yourself, your body, and about what being confident actually means. The good news is that you don't have to know everything before you shop. In fact, asking questions is one of the best ways to find a bra that actually works for you. On a long list of questions you might have, here are some that BRABAR can definitely help you with and hopefully make you feel more confident in your bra shopping experience
How Should My Bra Actually Fit?
The biggest reason that 80 percent of women are wearing the wrong size bra is because women don't really understand how bras are supposed to fit, and this lack of understanding is not our fault at all. So let me briefly explain how your bra is supposed to fit on the most basic of levels.Your band should fit level around your torso and feel snug like a hug (no matter if it has underwire or not). Your cups should feel smooth against your breast and not have any gapping or spillage. Your straps should feel secure on your shoulders without digging in or leaving any uncomfortable marks or feeling like they are giving your breasts all of their support. The biggest thing is really just checking in with how you feel. You should not feel restricted by the bra you are wearing, you should feel like you can move, breathe, and live comfortably.

What Size Bra Should I Try First?
There is no universal method of directing you towards one size bra that you will be able to start with. Use your band measurement as a jumping off point and start with a band size that corresponds to that measurement. The biggest thing you might run into at this stage is that there is not a universal method of measuring or deciding sizes across America. Another huge aspect is that stores may not carry the beginner size that you may need, try as best as possible to avoid force fitting, which is a huge method stores try to use to get clients to actually buy their products. The goal of finding your size is finding something that actually fits you and makes you feel good not being attached to the idea of a certain number and letter combination.

What Style Bra Should I Try?
Just like bra size there is a lot of room to play with bra style that will make you feel your best. To find the best style for you, think of your needs and then attempt to match those needs with a bra style that will correspond. Usually great starter bras can be soft bras, lightly lined bras, bralettes, and for people who need a little bit more support for more high impact activities. Soft bras are loved for their easy and relaxed feeling that supports everyday comfort and provides a good amount of everyday relaxed support. People love lightly lined bras for their smooth coverage and ease to integrate into everyday wear. Bralettes are a mix of casual relaxed comfort and support while also usually having some added fashion flare. Finally sports bras are great for higher levels of support during higher intensity activities where you feel a little more like you need to be hugged in place. No matter what style bra works best for you it does not define you at all.
How Many Bras Do I Need?
You need as many bras that feel right for you and correspond to your needs. While you by no means need a huge collection of bras, it is also nearly impossible to find one bra that can correspond to all of your needs. A simple equation to figure out how many bras you need is 2-3 everyday bras that you can depend on to wear to your normal daily activities and feel secure and confident, and 1 sports bra for more active days. This collection will grow and change along with you as your needs change so don't feel like you are forced to keep the same number of bras as years progress and your needs develop. Rotating your bras is extremely important in order to expand the lifecycle of your bra, allow for laundry to be done, and give your bra time to recover from a long day of wear. Start with a small dependable collection and feel open to changing and adapting it whenever you may need.
What If My Bra Feels Weird?
Trying any new item of clothing can take a second to get used to and adjust to, bras specifically apply to this because of how close they are to your body and how they so closely affect your confidence. A Bra can feel different then what you are used to because of the fact that they are a new addition to your wardrobe, a bra feeling weird does not automatically mean you are wearing the wrong size or style. There are certain feelings that do go beyond feeling weird and deserve some added attention. Your bra should never feel painful, it should never be uncomfortable pinching you anywhere on your body, it should never be digging into you and lastly you should never be looking forward to taking off your bra from the second you put it on.

What Are Some Questions I Can Ask Someone Working At The Store and Myself When I Try On A Bra?
The store associates overall are there to help you find a bra that feel right and makes you more confident. Some of the best questions to ask a store associate or parent are: "Does this band look like it fits correctly?" "Should I try another size?" "Can I compare this style with another one?" "Is this normal for a first bra?" "Which bra would you recommend for sports?" "Can you explain the difference between these styles?" You have every right to ask a store associate or parent any question that may lead to you feeling more comfortable and confident. The most important person when you are trying on a bra is of course, you! You should also be thinking internally and asking yourself questions about how the bra you are trying is making you feel and how it might compare to other bras which you have already tried. Some of these questions you should ask include: “Does this feel comfortable?” “Can I move easily?” “Would I want to wear this all day?” “Do I feel supported?” “Does it stay in place when I raise my arms?” “Does it make me forget I'm even wearing it?” No matter what questions you are asking, remember your end goal in finding a bra that works.

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?
FAQS
Absolutely! There are no silly questions when it comes to finding a bra that fits your body. Whether you're asking a parent, a store associate, or doing your own research, every question helps you better understand your body and what makes you feel comfortable. Even people who have been wearing bras for years are still learning about fit and different bra styles.
Comfort should always come first. A well-fitting bra should have a snug band, supportive cups, comfortable straps, and stay in place throughout the day. Instead of focusing on the size printed on the tag, focus on how the bra feels on your body. The right bra should help you move confidently—not make you count down the minutes until you can take it off.
That's completely normal, especially if it's your first time shopping for bras. You don't have to know exactly what you're looking for before you walk into a store. Start by thinking about what you need the bra for—everyday wear, sports, school, or a specific outfit—and be open to trying different styles. Finding your favorite bra is a process, and every bra you try teaches you something new about what works best for your body.
