Before you buy your next bra, here are the things we really wish someone had told us first.

My mom always used to say that the anticipation of an event is always the worst part of it. This definitely also applies to bra shopping. If you’ve never shopped for a bra before, I can feel like everyone else knows the rules except for you and you don’t know what you’re looking for or what to expect. It is completely normal to feel nervous about your first bra shopping trip. Bras describe your entire life as one of the first signs of you growing up so yes, it does feel like an experience that you want to go well and succeed. No one expects you to be an expert of fresh shopping but bra bars here to help explain what usually happens from walking into the store to walking out with a bra that actually fits you and that you were excited to wear.

How Can I Prepare To Go Bra Shopping?

Feeling like you are prepared to walk into an experience can make all the difference of how successful you feel throughout it. For bra shopping specifically it can be extremely helpful to wear a comfortable outfit that you will feel confident and comfortable to change in and out of while you are trying on different sizes and styles of bra.

If possible, it might be helpful to wear a fitted T-shirt so it is easier to see how a bra fits underneath your clothing. If you already own a bra, it could be helpful to wear this bra, so you and whoever is helping you can compare it to other styles and sizes.

Also, your support system can mean a lot. You might feel more comfortable during a bra shopping experience if you bring a trusted parent, adult, friend, or sibling. Remember that this experience is about you and finding something that you feel comfortable in, so you want to go and feel as comfortable as possible.

Should I Get Measured For My Bra Size, Also What Does Getting Measured Even Mean?

One of the most ominous parts of a bra shopping experience is getting measured. However, to be honest it really is not that scary I promise. Many girls are concerned about what getting measured is and what’s gonna happen to you if you do get measured, so let’s run through all the options and possibilities.

One of the biggest concerns about getting measured is what it actually means. Being measured just means that someone is going to help measure your bust and band size, usually with some sort of tape measure. Don’t worry, you are able to have an item of clothes on when you are measured whether it be a bra or a very thin T-shirt.

Just because you’re offered a bra fitting does not mean that you need to take the store up on it. Although they can definitely help you get into a more successful bra size faster there are also flawed fitting measure methods out there. Measurements are a starting point and not a final answer so there’s nothing to be scared about. The best bra is one that fits your body comfortably, not just based on a measuring tape. So remember, this is a learning experience for you and everything will be fine.

How Can I Make Finding The Right Bra As Easy As Possible?

The step-by-step of finding a bra is usually very simple. If you know what you were looking for when you go into the store, then it is as easy as asking someone who is working there to help you find what it is that you’re looking for. If you don’t know the exact item that’s totally fine and also to be expected.

The best way to find out what works best for you is to just try on a lot of different options and be honest about what it is that you were looking for from your bra and how you want to feel on your body. You’ll probably try on several bras before finding the perfect one that you like. Different styles can feel completely different even when they’re in the same size so do not jump to any conclusions and give yourself the grace to be able to try on multiple bras without settling. Remember, trying on bras is all about judging the product and not your body, bras are made to fit your body. You are not made to fit the bra.

Once you're in the fitting room do not feel rushed. The fitting room is a private space where you are free to take as much time as you need to test out if the brow you're trying on is actually the right one for you. If you are with someone you can trust, ask them for help. It is OK to get an added opinion, but it is also okay to have privacy in this experience.

No matter what, finding a bra does not need to be a one stop shop and will probably not be an instant success, this is not a bad thing. This means you were actually doing the due diligence to find out the best bra for you.

What If I Can't Find A Bra That Fits?

Even if you don’t walk out of a store with a bra that you feel like fits perfectly, what is important is that you did not settle. Sometimes, unfortunately, not every girl can shop in every store for the same product. The store that you are shopping in may not carry the right size for your body. Every single brand fits completely differently than another so your size and one storm might not work in another.

It is also OK if you simply do not like the styles available in that store, you should not feel forced to piss a certain style just because you need a bra. Not finding the right bra does not mean that there’s anything wrong with your body.

It just means that you still have to keep looking. Keep trying other sizes, keep trying other styles, visit as many stores as you want and feel free to take a break because sometimes bra shopping can feel like a lot.

One Last Thing Before You Go

Your first time bra shopping isn’t about getting everything right. It’s about learning about your body and your needs. Every bra you try on teaches you something new about your body and what you like in the form of support. Something that fits well on your best friend, you might hate and something that you might love may not work for anybody else you know, and that is totally OK. That is what makes everybody special and everyone’s experience with bras different. Finding the perfect size and style bra your first time trying them on is rare and you should not be disappointed if that’s not what happens to you.
