When Should You Get A New Bra

For all the teens out there, bras and bra shopping can be a confusing and awkward time. But we are here to demystify it all. How do you know when you need a new bra whether you just bought bras last month or haven’t done so in a long time?

Top tell-tale signs your bra needs to go:

Wrinkly cups = the cup size is too large.

Gapping cups = the band size is too large/loose.

Breasts overflow the sides = the cup size is too small.

The bra band moves up = the band size is too large/loose.

Bra band pinches = the band size is too small/tight.

Bra straps pinch or dig into your shoulders = the band size is too large/loose.

Bra straps fall off even after adjustments = the band size is too large/loose.

The bra moves up when you raise your arms = the band is too large/loose.

Fit Guide

We recommend getting your Bra Size re-fitted every six months to a year, especially if you feel your bra is not fitting you well anymore! If you are a teen or a tween especially, it is important to double-check because you are constantly changing. Bodies change even after puberty, so making sure you have a properly fitting bra will give you comfort and support.

YOUR OVERBUST MEASUREMENT - YOUR BAND SIZE = YOUR CUP SIZE

Step 1 - Band Size

The correct and accurate Band Size is crucial to the correct Bra Size . If your Band Size is wrong, so will your Cup Size , and then your bras won’t fit the right way. We want to avoid sister sizing or using other methods of measuring for the most accuracy.

The Band Size is measured by taking the measuring tape wrapping it around your underbust or ribcage, and keeping it parallel to the floor. Keep it snug BUT NOT TIGHT to get the most accurate measurement because you want the band of your bra to fit you snugly.

The correct Band Size will support you instead of hanging from your shoulders. After all, the support of a bra comes from the band, not the straps like most traditional bras. The wire is not the support, the wire is the SHAPE.

You must round up to the nearest even whole number for your Band Size . Typically band sizes are even numbers such as 28 Bands , 30 Bands , 32 Bands , 34 Bands , 36 Bands , 38 Bands , 40 Bands , and so on.

Step 2 - Overbust Measurement

The next and last measurement needed is your overbust measurement . The overbust measurement must be taken over the fullest part of your bust. The measuring tape should be parallel to the floor as well. Make sure the measuring tape is not too tight or too loose. Unlike measuring your ribcage, measuring the bust should have some give but not too much! You still want to round to the nearest whole number. So if you got a 30.5, round to 31, and so on.

Step 3 - Cup Size

YOUR OVERBUST MEASUREMENT - YOUR BAND SIZE = YOUR CUP SIZE

And that’s all you need to do to get your Cup Size .

Take the Band Size from your overbust measurement to get your Cup Size and that’s all you need.

Each inch difference is one cup size.

Less Than a one-inch difference is an AA-Cup.

A one-inch (1) difference is an A-Cup.

A two-inch (2) difference is a B-Cup.

A three-inch (3) difference is a C-Cup.

A four-inch (4) difference is a D-Cup.

A five-inch (5) difference is a DD-Cup or an E-Cup.

A six-inch (6) difference is a DDD-Cup or a F-Cup.

A seven-inch (7) difference is a DDDD-Cup or a G-Cup.

Or simply,

1 inch = A-Cup

2 inch = B-Cup

3 inch = C-Cup

4 inch = D-Cup

5 inch = DD-Cup or E-Cup

6 inch = DDD-Cup or F-Cup

7 inch = DDDD-Cup or G-Cup

The main issue in bra shopping is that many shop by the Cup Size when you should Shop by Band instead! The Cup Size is always determined by the difference between the Band Size and Overbust Measurement . When the Band Size changes (getting bigger or smaller), the Cup Size will be different because the difference has changed. The constant variable is whatever the difference is between your Band Size and Overbust Measurement .

Now you have all the tools to find your perfect fitting bra.

BRABAR’s Halter Bralette Collection , Soft Bra Collection , and Everyday Bra Collection are wonderful places to start to find the colors and styles of bras for teens and tweens alike!
